The snow has hit Chicago rather late this year, and many of us are ready to think spring! When the warm season finally does hit us, there are a few important tasks every homeowner should take care of right away in order to preserve the longevity of their gutters and roof.
Clean your Gutter
Your gutters have likely accumulated plenty of debris throughout the winter, especially with the odd temperatures we have had. Cleaning them is one of the best things you can do to ensure proper functioning and prevent any serious damage during the rainy spring months. Ensure that they are clear of any debris to allow all water to flow through easily.
Position your Gutters
The winter storms could have caused your gutters to shift. Take a close look at the downspouts to see where the water is going to let out. If it is too close to the foundation of your home, add extensions that allow you to point them away from your home. Standing water anywhere near the foundation will only cause further headaches down the road.
Take as close of a look at your roof as possible. If you see any obvious loose shingles or other damage, you should have it repaired right away. Snow and ice accumulation can cause damage to the shingles and flashing, which could cause immense damage to the structure underneath. Before leaks start entering your home and causing further damage, have them repaired.
Look for Cracks
Take a walk around your home and look for cracks in places such as seals around the windows and around the foundation. Any obvious cracks should be fixed right away to prevent water from entering your home during the rainy spring season, causing further damage to the interior of your home.
During the first few weeks of spring, it is beneficial for homeowners to take inventory of their home and what the winter weather has done to it. The amount of snow and ice that we have experienced could cause damage to your home that if caught right away, might not turn into a serious problem.
