Grilling season is in full swing. While the taste of grilled food cannot be rivaled with any other food throughout the year, it could also pose serious dangers to your siding if the proper precautions are not taken. Before you light up that grill, whether charcoal or gas, think about the following precautions to ensure that you are not putting your house and/or siding in danger.
There are some easy and obvious precautions to take and others that you might not readily think of before grilling:
- Keep the grill away from the side of your home – For some reason most homeowners put the grill right up against the side or back of the house. With the high temperatures that grills can get to, you could be putting your vinyl or wood siding in great danger. Try to keep at least 10 feet in between your grill and your home.
- Keep the grill on a safe surface – Placing the grill directly on the grass or the deck is another big mistake that homeowners make. Grass can easily catch on fire, which then transfers the heat directly to your siding, putting it at risk of melting.
- Keep the grill away from bushes or trees – The same is true for bushes and trees. If a grill is located too close to them, they too can catch on fire, putting your home at risk.
- Keep the fire extinguisher nearby – Chances are you have fire extinguishers in prominent places in your home in the event of disaster, but what about outside? If you are cooking outside, then you should have a fire extinguisher nearby to have the ability to put the flames out quickly.
Don’t forget that grills need maintenance too. Before you use your grill, especially if it has been a while, you should inspect all of its parts to ensure that they are working properly. If you are using a gas grill, you should determine that there are no leaks before using it to ensure that you do not put your family or home in any more danger.
When you practice these simple steps, you can reduce the risk of melting your siding. Rather than taking the fun out of hot summer days, these few precautions can help you to ensure that your summer goes on without a hitch.
